In the batik workshop, we learn traditional Indonesian craftsmanship. Using a special pen called a “canting” in Indonesian, a pattern is drawn on a piece of fabric with liquid wax. The wax then forms a barrier to dye adjacent areas in different colors.
Handmade batik is very valuable due to the lengthy process and complexity of the patterns and is only worn for the most important occasions.
The piece of batik you make yourself, measuring approximately 15x15 cm, can be taken home at the end of the workshop. The traditional batik pattern from Surakarta is available for the workshop. However, you can also bring your own pattern. A line width of about 2 mm should be used; finer lines are only recommended with some practice.
After successful participation, you can batik independently during the printing workshop's opening hours.
